This role is to provide support to deaf, deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing people that have requested specific support from Wakefield and District Society for Deaf People to meet their ongoing needs. In this role, you will provide support to those that are at the greatest risk of social isolation and others that may need a different form of support such as emotional support. You will be a positive role model to enable individuals to achieve their goals. There are a number of services and projects that Wakefield and District Society for Deaf People deliver and you will be expected to deliver this work with the existing team to make a difference to those engaged with our organisation.
As a Community Support Worker (Befriending), you will provide a holistic approach to providing support utilising Wakefield and District Society for Deaf People's services and project work. You will provide emotional support, social support and other forms of support to assist individuals to navigate the issues they may face in life. This will often mean making referrals to other organisations and to other services within our organisation. You may support individuals to develop specific skills and this can also include preparing meals, shopping, budgeting guidance and any other needs as identified. It could also include providing travel training to and from appointments and helping people to manage their daily routine tasks. Your key role will be supporting them in meeting their social needs by signposting them towards accessible recreational activities to improve their wellbeing and be someone they can trust. You may have to provide support to them to book their own appointments and deal with general day to day correspondence if they ask for this support.
You will inspire, motivate and be passionate about sharing your own and others personal experiences of deafness both positive and negative to achieve your goals. You will provide deaf representation at network events, to assist social club volunteers with social activities as and when required, to deliver ad-hoc work elsewhere, monitor the outcomes of this work and the individuals associated to Wakefield and District Society for Deaf People.
If you would like to apply for this position, please submit a cover letter highlighting your experiences and your CV.
You will be expected to provide contact details for two referees of which one should be a professional referee.
