How to Attract, Retain and Support Volunteers – For Sports Clubs & Organisations
In this workshop, you will learn about various topics surrounding involving volunteers in your club including -
- Volunteers vs. Employees – what are the rights of volunteers and your responsibilities
- Volunteer recruitment – understanding Volunteer motivations and barriers, the importance of diversity/inclusion and succession planning.
- Reviewing the Volunteer Journey - Designing volunteer roles, recruitment, training, support and recognition
- Keeping people safe – Dealing with problems relating to volunteers and keeping everyone safe including Safeguarding and Health and Safety in relation to volunteers.
You will also have access to templates and examples for you to use and adapt for your organisation.

Who should attend
Anyone involved in running or managing a sports club or community organisation in Wakefield that is:
- Involved in delivering any type of community sport / physical activity (can be affiliated or not affiliated to a National Governing Body)
- Supporting your local community as an un/constituted group, charity, social enterprise or community benefit society
- Generating an income of up to £500k
We are particularly interested in supporting volunteers, managers, staff and trustees from sports clubs running in the Wakefield area.
About the session
This workshop will be delivered by Becky Bracey (Volunteer services and safeguarding lead) and Imogen Spencer (Volunteering project co-ordinator) at TSL Kirklees. Becky Bracey has been involved in third sector organisations for over 5 years, and has delivered numerous training and workshops on best practice for involving volunteers. Imogen Spencer has been working with TSL for over 2 years, and has focussed on involving over 75 young volunteers using innovative approaches.
