Understanding and Supporting Those Who Have Experienced Domestic Abuse

The Strategic Safer Communities Team at Wakefield have organised a range of training that is free and available to VCSE organisations.

Training Partner: KRASAC -“Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre is an intersectional feminist organisation; registered charity, No. 1205126, that offers specialist therapeutic and advisory services for people, aged 13+, who have experienced rape, sexual and domestic abuse, at any time in their lives, living in Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield.”

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise the Forms of Domestic Abuse – Develop attendees’ awareness of the various forms of domestic abuse, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse.
  • Explore Coercive Control – Deepen attendees’ knowledge of coercive control, its signs, and the profound impact it can have on survivors’ autonomy and mental, emotional and mental health.
  • Understand Forced Marriage and Honour-Based Abuse (HBA) – To be able to identify the characteristics of forced marriage and “so called” honour-based abuse and understand the cultural and societal factors influencing these forms of harm.
  • Examine the Impacts of Domestic Abuse – Explore how domestic abuse affects mental, social, and emotional wellbeing, relationships, overall functioning in survivors. Also, develop awareness around the coping mechanisms survivors adopt to survive.
  • Introduce the DASH Risk Assessment Model – Learn how to use the Domestic Abuse, Stalking, and Harassment (DASH) risk assessment model to identify and evaluate the level of risk in cases of abuse.
  • Build Confidence in Identifying and Responding to Abuse – Enhance attendees’ ability to recognise signs of abuse and use professional curiosity, provide appropriate, empathetic, and effective responses to individuals in need.
  • Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Safeguarding Strategies – Develop skills to collaborate effectively with other professionals and organisations, ensuring robust safeguarding measures are in place for survivors.
