BHA for Equality is a leading health and social care charity that works to challenge health inequalities and delivers a range of services to support individuals, families & communities to improve their health & well-being.  

The Leeds Skyline and Wakefield projects provide emotional and practical support for people living with HIV through one-to-one and group support, information and advice, counselling and a range of activities and events to support people to live well.  For this project, BHA for Equality are working in partnership with The Hepatitis C Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a new peer support service for people newly diagnosed with HIV and/or Hepatitis C (HCV) peer support across Leeds and Wakefield. BHA for Equality are looking for someone to use their own lived experience of HIV and/or HCV, to provide information and advice, support, and onward referrals for people newly diagnosed or re-engaged via Emergency Departments.  

The successful candidate will be employed by BHA, work in partnership with The Hepatitis C Trust and work within a multi-disciplinary team alongside clinics in Leeds and Wakefield.  

Using your lived experience, you will provide one-to-one peer support to people diagnosed with HIV and/or Hepatitis C, within clinical and community settings, providing information and advice and onward referrals to BHA’s and Hepatitis C Trust wider services and other providers where appropriate. You will recruit and manage a team of volunteer peer mentors to provide ongoing support and facilitate collaborative working with our partners to ensure people receive social and emotional support.  

You will need:

  • Lived experience of HIV and/or HCV
  • Experience of working with people from marginalised communities and people who experience multiple disadvantage
  • Be solution focused and proactive, with excellent communication skills and an ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with service users, volunteers and other professionals.
  • Knowledge of the welfare, housing and support systems available across Leeds and Wakefield

The role will involve:

  • Working co-productively with people living with or affected by HIV and/or HCV in Leeds and the Wakefield district.
  • Focusing on outcomes, building resilience and giving people the skills and tools, they need to self-manage.
  • Ensuring that all services delivered are easy to access, understandable and easy to navigate.
  • Delivering high quality support, using insight to continuously improve how we work.
  • Advocacy and liaison with other providers across Leeds and Wakefield.
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver the best outcomes for people living with HIV and/or HCV.
  • Working in accordance with BHA’s policies and procedures
