Each month we'll be showcasing the amazing organisations that make up our membership and the important work they do across the Wakefield District.

isability Sport Yorkshire aims to address the inequality in access to sport for disabled people. They have been a member of Nova Wakefield District since June 2014!

What is your organisation’s vision for Wakefield District?
Disability Sport Yorkshire has committed to three major impacts. We aim to make Yorkshire the best place in England for disabled people to:

  • improve their health through physical activity
  • play sport on a regular basis
  • become a sporting champion

We are working to give disabled people the best possible sporting experience they can have, no matter where they live in the region and ensure there is no better place in the England for disabled people to play and/or succeed in sport.

With our main office and community centre situated in the heart of Wakefield, our aim is to make Wakefield the most accessible place for disability sport in Yorkshire. We currently occupy Denhale Active Recreation Centre, providing sporting opportunities for a variety of groups.

Denhale ARC provides an inclusive sportingfacility in the heart of Wakefield. The centre contains a sports hall, small gym room (pilates/dance/Zumba), large meeting room and a comfortable seatingarea with refreshments. Full disability access, onsite parking, changingfacilities - the centre has everything you require to enjoy sport in acomfortable setting.

Any project, volunteer or staff member that you’d like to highlight?
We are working with a number of partners and together we are developing Denhale ARC as a hub for disability sport. Specifically we are:

  • Supporting Pinderfields Spinal Injuries Unit to re-introduce sport-based solutions to aid spinal injuries patients in their rehabilitation. We have identified that there is a need for facilities in the widercommunity to enable this work to grow.
  • Working with WheelPower on a project in the North to provide Junior Sports Camps and on joint activity with the Spinal Injuries Centres in Wakefield and Sheffield.
  • Co-ordinating the development of wheelchair and powerchair football, blind and VI football, and deaf football together with the county FAs, Wakefield Able2, Achieve Potentials and the Wheelchair Football Association. With the support of the Wakefield MDC, the use of our sport hall and the adjacent WMBC pitches would enable us to rapidly escalate these programmes.
  • Collaboratingwith local disability sports organisations in Wakefield to deliver training, coaching and sports leaders programmes to support different disabilityactivities including satellite club development with links to accessible schooland club facilities.
  • Supporting the Creating Connections officers through the West Yorkshire County Sports Partnership to work on GP referrals and building links to health providers.

How can local organisations and the public support you?
Partnerships are a key to our success, and we are always looking for organisations, groups or individuals to support within. This can be either financially, providing facilities, creating opportunities for disabled people, or fundraising - the list is endless and we welcome any help we can get!
