Waterton’s Wall is tied to Charles Waterton, a key figure in the foundation of modern environmentalism. His wall encircles the first nature reserve in the world, in Walton, Wakefield. It is a Grade 2 listed structure.
The wall’s poor condition is due to its age and weathering. It is at risk.
The Friends of Waterton’s Wall is a charity that wishes to ensure that future generations are aware of the wall’s significance by preserving a section in the first instance and creating a destination for visitors. The project has two main goals. To:
The completion of the wall celebrates its bicentenary in 2026 and The Friends of Waterton’s Wall are planning a month-long series of events in May of that year. Wall Fest 26 will involve collaboration with the local community, volunteers and other local voluntary organisations.
The Friends of Waterton’s Wall are planning four themes:
They want to be as inclusive as possible!
We encourage other Nova Members to get involved! For example, The Friends of Waterton’s Wall would love to arrange a walk or talk for your group, or you may have your own ideas of how to get involved.
