Residents of the Warwick Estate began sharing recipes in lockdown and the food initiative now reaches 70 families in a programme managed by Warwick Ahead. Each week residents receive a bag with a recipe and fresh ingredients to make a nutritious meal. The recipes are varied from Mexican wraps to a roast dinner!
Local community retailers, such as Bennetts & The Proper Meat Company, have supported. The scheme is funded by Warwick Ahead Big Local and was previously funded by West Yorkshire Targeted Prevention Fund.
Local residents have used the recipes other times to cook for their families and it works out cheaper making these big fresh meals. One resident said they hadn’t tried some of the foods, such as sweet potatoes, and now they buy them often.
Warwick Ahead are looking for new volunteers from the Warwick Estate to help their community work. Through sharing recipes and cooking tips in lockdown this thriving community initiative has built friendships, promoted healthy eating, and continues to encourage families to cook nutritious meals together.
Quotes from residents:
“My kids get excited for Thursdays to see what we are cooking.”
“I'd never tried spinach till I tried your recipes, we not buy it as part of our shopping.”
