EYAM CIC have been a Nova member since August 2016!
What is your organisation’s vision for Wakefield District?
Our vision for the Wakefield District is one where the residents of Wakefield receive first class services and support. We envisage the third sector working in partnership with the Local Authority and others to deliver qualitative Youth Services for young people.
Ideally, we’d like to see a co-operative working approach where Youth Service provision with common protocols is delivered by different partners to the same standard across the Wakefield District. We are already beginning to see some of this work being covered by the Third Sector Framework.
What project are you working on that you’re most proud of?
A project that we are currently working on is an International Youth Exchange in August. We’ve secured funding from UK German Connection, Active and Inspired (WMDC) and Herne Council to take 12 young people from Pontefract and Knottingley to Wakefield’s twin town in Herne, Germany.
We’re stopping in the Pluto Youth Centre, and we have an action-packed week planned to include meeting the Town Mayor, a trip to the Cranger Fair, workshops, go-karting, and visits to indoor and outdoor waterparks.
Fun fact about your organisation
Two of our Directors attended an International Youth Exchange between Pontefract and Herne in 1987 as young people from the Phoenix Youth Club in Pontefract Town Centre. We’re now thrilled to be delivering a Youth Exchange from Pontefract to Herne in Germany 35 years later.
We really hope that this will re-ignite the twin town exchanges and that the City of Wakefield will start to deliver annual Youth Exchanges with our twin towns.
Any project, volunteer or staff member that you’d like to highlight?
EYAM CIC is very proud of our staff team and the young people that we work with. We’ve been working with the Big Local Warwick Ahead for the last 5 years and we’re chuffed to be delivering Youth Services on the Estate for the next 3 years up until the end of the project.
We’ve also been busy working on the Pontefract Active and Inspired Project, where we’ve been delivering a NEET drop-in session from Pontefract Library and Detached Youth Work sessions across Pontefract.
What do you like about being a Nova member?
Since joining Nova we have received lots of support from their staff team. We’ve worked in partnership with Nova on Warwick Ahead and Kaylee Thompson, Community Development Worker for Nova, has been a constant support for us delivering our Work on Warwick Estate, so massive shout out to Kaylee for all the hard work. Also, Julie Baker has been a massive help in enabling EYAM CIC to develop and ensuring that the Big Local work is a success.
How can local organisations and the public support you?
The local organisations and public can help us with many aspects of our work. For example, over the winter period we consulted with over 400 people via survey monkey regarding proposed developments on Orchard Head Park on the Nevison Estate, Pontefract. Hopefully, work will start soon on the park and many people expressed an interest in helping out with the project. It would be great if we could get local businesses and residents on the Estate to help out with the Rugby Pitch and the BMX track build.
