Anybody can sign up to Citizen Coin, including those who already volunteer or those who would like to.

As a VCSE organisation, you can advertise volunteering activities on Citizen Coin and reward participants, new and existing, with a Citizen Coin which can then be exchanged at local participating retailers for discounts on goods and services.

Citizen Coin is provided, free to use by all, by Wakefield Council.

I’ve been involved in Citizen Coin since early conversations about its arrival were shared in our Volunteer Managers Network in 2023, opening discussion with the people most closely working with volunteers. Since then, I’ve attended a steering group which have heard regular updates about the development of Citizen Coin and its arrival and use in Wakefield, with opportunity to ask questions, highlight specific considerations and get involved in testing and developing the Wakefield app. I was also involved in a multi-agency interview panel for the recruitment of the CC Project lead and have attended some UX testing sessions.

As a Project Board member, I am supporting the launch and implementation of the Citizen Coin app. This will raise awareness of volunteering across Wakefield District and demonstrate the benefits of volunteering to the health and wellbeing of residents. It will engage with local businesses, increasing their visibility and supporting the local economy.
